MEDAL TUITION AND TESTS
Medal tuition and tests are an excellent way to improve your dancing and measure your achievements. At the end of a course of tuition you receive an evaluation of your competence in the dances you have practised. Medal tests are judged by an independent examiner, but unlike competitions, you are not assessed against other dancers.
The best part of the medal test is that you get feedback. The examiner awards a mark – Pass, Commended Pass, Highly Commended, etc. and writes comments on how you danced and what you can do to improve your dancing. In social dance classes, it is not possible to spend the time required to explain how to achieve the technique and control that a good dancer displays.
In medal classes emphasis is placed on balance and posture, correct footwork and alignment of steps and correct interpretation of the rhythm and music. Medal classes usually last between an hour and one and a half hours and are over a twelve to sixteen week period. Classes are conducted in the three styles, Modern, Latin and New Vogue .
MEDAL LEVELS AND STANDARDS
There are a number of levels to be achieved in medal tests, depending on the studio or society conducting the medal tuition. Broadly the main levels are as follows:
STUDIO PROFICIENCY; PRE BRONZE; BRONZE;
BRONZE BAR/STAR; SILVER; SILVER BAR/STAR; GOLD; GOLD BAR/STAR and OSCAR
There are variations within these levels to include one dance medals and composite medals (dances from more than one style). Each level requires a different number of dances to be studied and danced with the higher medals having more complex choreography.
Because all your attention is focussed on particular dances during medal tuition, a greater understanding of the various elements of dance is gained. This carries over to all your dancing and allows you to produce a more balanced, comfortable and enjoyable performance whenever you dance.
